At Coursmos, we’re very passionate about education and technology but we’re concerned about what we’ve seen so far. I for one am just as concerned about the expectations that people have. Everyone seems to be staring at their feet instead of looking at the horizon where education meets technology. I think that online learning and education today uses the vast potential of technology about as effectively as Shrek uses soap. Sure, Ed-Tech and online courses are relatively new. So is modern technology for that matter so I’m not here to excoriate anyone. I think though that it’s incumbent on the folks in the world of technology to comprehend base problems in education and envision solutions for them. It’s just as imperative that academia stand up and demand more from Silicon Valley than online videos, e-readers and 140 characters.

Educators today are observing and engaging in a dynamic historical shift in the paradigm of education. Changes in educational paradigms are nothing new. Throughout history changes in psychological and learning theories, in sync with historical events, prompted the application of diverse theories of learning, such as the application of constructivist and cognitive theories in the 20th century (Edgar 2012). Yet, educators have often been slow to adapt emerging learning theories due to the complexity of education systems (Rogers 2003 cited in Edgar 2012).
Yet today, changes are coming at a much faster pace, as technology is infiltrating every facet of everyday life at lightning speed and
